Amplifies Voices

Why do we need to amplify Indigenous voices?

Amplifying Indigenous voices is one of the key parts of understanding and respect. Encouraging Indigenous people to introduce their history, culture and experiences instead of text book studies is vital when building an equitable relationships. For too long, Indigenous voices have been ignored and distorted by mainstream society, but to truely recognize the diversity and resilience of Indigenous people, we need to listen to their stories.

What can we do?

To uplift Indigenous voices, we can start from two aspects, online and offline.

Online

To support Indigenous learning online, by focusing and sharing content led by Indigenous voices is a strong start. For the community, playlists of Indigenous mediums can be embedded on the website, allowing more people to hear directly from Indigenous people.

Offline

Schools and communities can invite elders or Indigenous artists to share their stories in person, or host lieraturary readings, and workshops. The community needs to activily participate, organize and promote these events. Additionally, there are powwow festivals in the Toronto area throughout the year, and communities can promote these events.
